Acer Keyboard Replacement Guide
Acer covers a wide range of consumer laptops, and the keyboard job follows the family, not the badge. On the Acer Extensa 4220 / 4630 family in the video below, the full keyboard is removed and a new full keyboard is fitted as a complete unit. Other Acer families differ — some keyboards release from the top, some are serviced from inside, and some come as part of a palmrest assembly — so match by exact model and part number before ordering. Use the video for the method, and the listing for the part.
Watch: Acer Extensa 4220 / 4630 full keyboard replacement
A complete Extensa 4220 / 4630 replacement from the site owner's own channel (@FIXKEY): around halfway in, the old keyboard is lifted clear, its metal back panel and barcode label visible, and its ribbon cable is disconnected, leaving the keyboard slot empty; shortly after, a replacement keyboard is connected and pressed key-side up into the chassis, and the machine is reassembled from underneath. Watch the cable seating closely — on this generation the keyboard presses into place, and a cable left loose or a keyboard left unseated is what leaves keys dead or the keyboard flexing. Note that the video shows the swap sequence itself rather than an unboxing, so judge the replacement by the fitting steps, not by packaging.
Before you start
- Shut down, unplug, and photograph each stage. Acer models mix screw types and lengths, so keep screws grouped by stage.
- Confirm the exact model (for example Extensa 4220 / 4630 vs Aspire V5-572 vs TravelMate 5760 vs Aspire S7) and, wherever possible, the part number on your old keyboard's label — see how to find your keyboard part number. The same Acer badge covers several different keyboards, and layout and backlight also vary.
- Check whether your replacement is a bare keyboard or a keyboard with frame / palmrest assembly. The Extensa 4220 / 4630 family in the video takes a full keyboard unit; an assembly-type listing may swap differently, so follow your part's fixings, not this video's, where they differ.
- Tools: small Phillips driver, plastic spudger, tweezers. Work on a clean, non-slip surface, and keep the battery disconnected until the keyboard is tested.
Steps
- Remove the bottom cover screws and lift the cover away, working around the seam with a plastic tool.
- Disconnect the battery first — before touching any other connector.
- Work through the internal components as the video shows, freeing the keyboard ribbon cable at its connector: release the locking flap, slide the cable out squarely, and note its fold and routing.
- Lift the old keyboard out — on the Extensa 4220 / 4630 family this means lifting the keyboard out of the chassis as the video shows; on top-release or assembly models the release is different, so follow your family's fixings, not this video's, where they differ.
- Seat the replacement keyboard as your family requires, reconnect its ribbon cable (fully inserted, locking flap closed), reconnect the battery temporarily, and test every key before the machine is closed up.
- Reassemble in reverse order.
