Dell Latitude Keyboard Replacement Guide

Latitude is Dell's business line, and the keyboard job follows the generation, not the badge. On the Latitude 5320 in the video below, the keyboard is serviced from inside: a full strip-down, the board out, and the keyboard screwed into the frame. Other Latitude generations differ - some keyboards release from the top, some come as part of a palmrest assembly - so match by exact model and part number before ordering. Our current Latitude stock is concentrated on the 9510 / 9520 2-in-1 family, whose keyboards are not the same part as the 5320 in the video: use the video for the method, and the listing for the part.

A complete Latitude 5320 replacement (Tech Qualities): bottom cover off, battery and board handled first, the old keyboard removed, the new keyboard seated and screwed into place, then the machine reassembled and checked. Watch the keyboard installation section closely - on this generation the keyboard is fixed with screws into the frame, and a missed screw is what leaves a keyboard sitting unevenly or flexing under the keys.

Before you start

  • Shut down, unplug, and photograph each stage. Latitude models mix screw types and lengths, so keep screws grouped by stage.
  • Confirm the exact model (for example Latitude 9510 2-in-1 vs Latitude 5320 vs Latitude 7204 Rugged) and, wherever possible, the part number on your old keyboard's label - see how to find your keyboard part number. The same "Latitude" badge covers several different keyboards, and layout and backlight also vary.
  • Check whether your replacement is a bare keyboard or a keyboard with frame / palmrest assembly. The 5320 in the video takes a screwed-in keyboard; a 2-in-1 or assembly-type listing may swap differently, so follow your part's fixings, not this video's, where they differ.
  • Tools: small Phillips driver, plastic spudger, tweezers. Work on a clean, non-slip surface, and keep the battery disconnected until the keyboard is tested.

Steps

  1. Remove the bottom cover screws and lift the cover away, working around the seam with a plastic tool.
  2. Disconnect the battery first - before touching any other connector.
  3. Work through the internal components as the video shows, freeing the keyboard ribbon cable at its connector: release the locking flap, slide the cable out squarely, and note its fold and routing.
  4. Lift the old keyboard out of the frame - on the 5320 this means removing its fixing screws; on top-release or assembly models the release is different, so follow your generation's fixings, not this video's, where they differ.
  5. Seat the replacement keyboard, fix it as your generation requires, reconnect its ribbon cable (fully inserted, locking flap closed), reconnect the battery temporarily, and test every key before the machine is closed up.
  6. Reassemble in reverse order.
