HP Pavilion Keyboard Replacement Guide

Pavilion covers a lot of ground - from the older G7 and DV7 families to the 14, 15 and x360 lines - and the removal method follows the generation, not the badge. On the Pavilion 15-cc / 15-cs / 15-cr generation shown in the video below, the job is the tricky one: a full internal strip-down, and a keyboard held in by melted plastic posts rather than screws. Other Pavilion generations are simpler - clip-release keyboards, or frame units that swap as one piece. Match by exact model and part number before ordering, and check whether your listing says "with Frame" - that changes both the part and the job.

Watch: HP Pavilion 15 full keyboard replacement (the tricky generation)

A complete Pavilion 15 replacement (Live Free): internal components and board out, the old keyboard lifted from the top case, the new keyboard seated and fixed in place with its mounting posts, then the machine reassembled and shown working. Watch the post-fixing section closely - on this generation the keyboard is not screwed in, and the fixing method is the step that decides whether the new keyboard sits flat and stays put.

Before you start

  • Shut down, unplug, and photograph each stage. Pavilion models mix screw types and lengths, so keep screws grouped by stage.
  • Confirm the exact model (for example G7-2000 vs DV7-4000 vs 15-AU) and, wherever possible, the part number on your old keyboard's label - see how to find your keyboard part number. The same "Pavilion 15" badge covers several different keyboards, and layout and backlight also vary.
  • Check whether your replacement comes with a frame. Several of our Pavilion G7 listings are sold "with Frame" - if yours is, the old keyboard and frame come out together and the new unit goes in as one piece; if it is a bare keyboard, it seats into the existing frame instead.
  • Tools: small Phillips driver, plastic spudger, tweezers, and - for the heat-staked generation in the video - a soldering iron for the mounting posts. Work on a clean, non-slip surface.

Steps

  1. Remove the bottom cover screws and lift the cover away, working around the seam with a plastic tool.
  2. Disconnect the battery first - before touching any other connector.
  3. Work through the internal components as the video shows, freeing the keyboard ribbon cable at its connector: release the locking flap, slide the cable out squarely, and note its fold and routing.
  4. Lift the old keyboard out of the top case - on the 15-cc / 15-cs / 15-cr generation this means dealing with the melted mounting posts; on clip-release or frame models the release is different, so follow your generation's fixings, not this video's, where they differ.
  5. Seat the replacement keyboard, fix it as your generation requires, reconnect its ribbon cable (fully inserted, locking flap closed), reconnect the battery temporarily, and test every key before the machine is closed up.
  6. Reassemble in reverse order.

HP Pavilion keyboards we stock

Browse HP Pavilion keyboards - G7-2000 and DV7-4000 families in several layouts, Pavilion 14-AB and 13-A, 15-AU/AW, Pavilion x360 14-DW and TouchSmart 11-E, with frame and bare options as listed. Check the model series and the part number against the listing before ordering - a Pavilion 15-AU keyboard is not the same part as a Pavilion 15 from another generation.
