Panasonic Toughbook Keyboard Replacement (FZ-55 / FZ-40)
The Toughbook 55 and 40 are built to be serviced in the field, and the keyboard is one of the easiest parts to swap: it lifts out from the top once its retaining screws and bracket are off - no full teardown. This guide covers the removal, the connector, and the refit, with two videos: a full replacement first, then Panasonic's own removal walkthrough.

Removal, connector fitting and the bracket going back on - the complete job in about three minutes, filmed in our own workshop. Follow the written steps below alongside it.
Before you start
- Shut down, unplug, and remove the battery pack - on a Toughbook it slides out in seconds, and it is your power isolation.
- Tools: a small Phillips screwdriver, a plastic spudger, and tweezers for the connector. Keep the screws together; note which ones came from the keyboard bracket.
- Check your replacement first: layout (US or Japanese), backlight version, and connector position must match the old keyboard. If in doubt, photograph the label on the underside of the old one and compare - see how to find your keyboard part number.
Removal
- Open the laptop and work from the top. Remove the screws securing the keyboard and its retaining bracket/cover strip above the keyboard.
- Starting from a top corner, work the spudger gently along the top edge of the keyboard to release it, as Panasonic's own service video below shows. Lift the keyboard up and towards the screen - it is still connected underneath.
- Lay the keyboard face-down on the palmrest. The ribbon cable has a pull tab / connector at the mainboard end: release it and slide the cable free. Note the cable's routing for the refit.

Fitting the replacement
- Connect the new keyboard's ribbon cable first, while the keyboard is still loose - seat it fully and square, then close the connector. Tweezers help on the FZ-55/FZ-40 connector, as the first video shows.
- Reconnect the battery temporarily and power on. Test every key (and the backlight, if fitted) before the bracket goes back - a reseat now takes seconds.
- Power off, lay the keyboard into its recess, refit the retaining bracket and screws, and press along the edges until it sits flush.
