Panasonic Let's Note Keyboard Replacement (CF-SZ / CF-SV)

Let's Note machines (CF-SZ5, CF-SZ6, CF-SV2 and relatives) are Japanese business ultraportables with a top-access keyboard under a delicate surround - the job is quick, but the trim and the ribbon cable reward patience over force. This walkthrough uses a CF-SZ6 replacement.

Watch: CF-SZ6 keyboard replacement

A complete swap on a CF-SZ6 by a Japanese DIY owner (video in Japanese; the steps below carry the instructions in English). Note two details worth copying: he protects the palmrest with tape before prying, and the fiddliest moment is seating the new keyboard's FPC cable - exactly where most people rush.

Before you start

  • Shut down, unplug, and remove the battery pack.
  • Tools: small Phillips screwdriver, plastic spudger, tweezers - and a strip of masking or painter's tape to protect the palmrest around the keyboard, as in the video.
  • Let's Note keyboards are Japanese-layout parts with model-specific frames. Match by the label on the underside of the old keyboard, not just by the series name - see how to find your keyboard part number.

Steps

  1. Remove any bottom screws that secure the keyboard (check your model's service layout; some are marked with a keyboard icon), and tape around the keyboard surround to protect the finish.
  2. Release the keyboard from the top edge with the plastic spudger, working along the edge little by little. The surround on these machines marks easily - slow and even beats strong.
  3. Lift the keyboard and lay it back towards the screen. It is still connected by its FPC ribbon cable.
  4. Open the connector's locking flap and slide the FPC out. Note its exact routing and fold - the replacement must follow the same path.
  5. Connect the new keyboard's FPC first, while it is still loose: straight in, fully home, flap closed. This is the step the video's author struggled with - tweezers and patience help; a cable seated at an angle will cost you a row of keys.
  6. Reconnect the battery, power on, and test every key before pressing the keyboard fully home and refitting screws.
